The Dutchess County Health Department is organizing a rabies vaccination clinic on Saturday (May 31) in Poughkeepsie. The event will take place at the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary (HVARS) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents must pre-register online at hvars.org to participate.
The clinic offers free rabies vaccinations for Dutchess County residents, while non-residents will be charged $15 per pet. Vaccines are available for dogs, cats, and domestic ferrets aged three months and older. Pet owners are required to bring their animals on leashes or in carriers. Proof of prior rabies vaccination is necessary for a three-year certificate; otherwise, the vaccination will be valid for one year. Microchipping and distemper vaccines will also be available for additional fees.
Rabies vaccinations are mandatory in New York State for all cats, dogs, and ferrets by four months of age, with regular revaccination required to maintain immunity. The Dutchess County Health Department emphasizes the importance of keeping pets vaccinated to prevent the spread of rabies.
For questions or concerns about rabies exposure, residents can contact the Dutchess County Department of Health. Additional rabies clinics and spay and neuter services are planned for later in 2025.
