New York kicked off Pride Month with a vibrant display of solidarity as Governor Kathy Hochul ordered state buildings and landmarks to fly the Pride and Progress Pride flags on Sunday (June 1). Notable sites such as the Capitol, Empire State Plaza, and Niagara Falls will also be illuminated in Pride colors on select dates throughout the month.

Governor Hochul emphasized New York's pivotal role in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, referencing the state's historic contributions since 1969. She stated, "New York is the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement... Now more than ever, we are fighting to protect LGBTQ+ rights and protections." The governor reaffirmed the state's commitment to ensuring all New Yorkers feel safe, heard, and valued, regardless of their identity or whom they love.

The Pride flags will be displayed at state parks and offices across New York, reinforcing the state's support for the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, New York City's annual Pride March, one of the largest in the world, is scheduled for June 29. This event marks the culmination of a month-long celebration of diversity and inclusion.
