An investigation is ongoing following a fatal officer-involved shooting in Poughkeepsie. The incident occurred on Thursday (June 5) at around 2:15 p.m. on Fair Oaks Drive, where police responded to a report of a man attacking members of the Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team with a sword. The man, whose name has not been released, was shot and killed by police during the confrontation.
According to Times Union, the police arrived to find two men inside the house, one with a head injury. The suspect was armed with a sword and attacked the crisis team worker, slashing her hand. Officers engaged with the suspect, and at least one officer fired, striking the man. Despite immediate first aid, the suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The Mid-Hudson News reported that the suspect's father, who had initially called for help, also sustained serious injuries during the incident. The crisis team worker received stitches and treatment for her injuries. Andrew O’Grady, CEO of MHA Dutchess, expressed concern for the employees involved and emphasized the unpredictability of such encounters, highlighting the need for emotional support for the staff.
