Ulster County is inviting residents to two open houses next week to discuss the Bridge Street Bridge Replacement Project in Phoenicia. The meetings will take place at Parish Hall, Church of St. Francis De Sales, on Thursday (June 12) from noon to 6 PM, and Friday (June 13) from 3 PM to 8 PM. These sessions provide an opportunity for the public to learn about the project, ask questions, and share their thoughts and concerns.
The Bridge Street bridge, which spans the Esopus Creek and connects Main Street with High Street, is a critical entrance to downtown Phoenicia. Originally constructed in 1976, the bridge has been damaged by floods several times, most notably during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. The Ulster County Department of Public Works is working with SLR Engineering to design a replacement bridge that will address these issues and improve flood resilience.
The Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program notes that the current bridge has been overtopped by floods greater than the 10-year magnitude on multiple occasions. The replacement project aims to enhance the bridge's durability and ensure the safety of the community.
Residents are encouraged to attend the open houses to view displays of bridge alternatives and provide input. Ulster County representatives and project design engineers will be available to answer questions and gather feedback from the community.
