The Catskill Police Department is alerting residents about a new scam involving fraudulent phone calls. Scammers are contacting individuals, falsely claiming that their power will be shut off by Central Hudson Electric due to unpaid bills. The police advise anyone receiving such calls to hang up immediately and contact Central Hudson directly.
According to Central Hudson, these scams often involve requests for payment via store-bought debit cards or money orders, which is a clear red flag. The company emphasizes that it never demands payment in unusual ways and advises customers to verify any suspicious calls by contacting their customer service.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any fraudulent activity to the local police. Central Hudson also warns against providing personal information, such as utility account details or credit card information, to unknown callers or emails. If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a call or email, contact Central Hudson at (845) 452-2700 for verification.
