The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation (BTCF) is launching a two-year guaranteed income pilot program to support single-parent households in Columbia County. This initiative will provide $500 monthly to 42 selected families, aiming to offer financial stability and flexibility. To qualify, applicants must earn no more than 80% of the county's median income and have at least one child under six years old. The application deadline is July 1, and participants will be chosen through a lottery system.
The program, in partnership with Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood (GHPN), aims to address common barriers to income stability. Kara Mikulich, Interim President of BTCF, emphasized the program's potential, stating, "The simplicity of guaranteed income is powerful—it's direct, effective, and rooted in trust." Kelly Sweet, Interim Director of Philanthropic Services at BTCF, added, "This initiative is about more than money—it's about stability, dignity, and opportunity for families during the most important years of a child's life."
According to BTCF, similar programs have shown positive outcomes, including improved health and family relationships. The program's administrative lead, GHPN, will provide direct support to participating families. Joan Hunt, Executive Director of GHPN, expressed excitement about expanding this approach across Columbia County, building on the success of the HudsonUP program.
The initiative is designed to help families meet basic needs, spend more time with their children, and pursue work, education, or training for a stronger future. It is part of a broader effort to provide practical and transformative support to families in need.
