Kingston is experiencing a shortage of lifeguards as the summer season approaches. The city's Parks and Recreation Department is reopening applications to fill positions at Andretta Pool, Splash Pad, and Kingston Point Beach. Pay for lifeguards ranges from $18 to $24 per hour, depending on experience and certifications.

The shortage is part of a broader issue affecting the entire state. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has 1,100 lifeguard positions available across 70 state park beaches and pools, with starting pay at $21.86 per hour, according to state officials. The state is actively recruiting lifeguards as part of Governor Hochul's "You're Hired" initiative, which aims to fill public sector jobs.

Lifeguard candidates must be at least 17 years old and complete both the Lifeguard Qualifying Procedure and Training Program. The role is crucial for ensuring the safety of more than 25 million swimmers each year, as emphasized by the New York State Parks system.

Kingston's Parks and Recreation Department is working diligently to ensure that the pool and beach remain open throughout the summer. The department encourages potential applicants to apply as soon as possible to help address the shortage.
