In Red Hook, Rohan Patrick, 42, was sentenced to 364 days in jail for his role in a tragic accident that resulted in the death of Linh Hong Nguyen, a 25-year-old graduate student at Bard College. Patrick pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide after admitting to driving drowsy and speeding when he struck Nguyen on a sidewalk on May 25, 2024.

The incident occurred when Patrick, driving a 2017 Ford Fusion, lost control of his vehicle on North Broadway/Route 9 near Cherry Street. He admitted to traveling at speeds of 50 to 60 mph in a 30 mph zone and struggling to stay awake for at least 30 minutes before the crash. According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Patrick remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi emphasized the tragedy of the case, noting the loss of Nguyen as a "bright, compassionate young woman." He stated, "While no legal outcome can undo this tragedy, we hope this step toward accountability offers some measure of comfort to those who loved her."

The sentence reflects Patrick's failure to meet the basic duty of care required under the law, aligning with the standard for criminal negligence. The case highlights the dangers of drowsy driving and the importance of accountability in such tragic incidents.
