The City of Poughkeepsie has announced a change in the start date for the Garden Street Bridge Replacement Project. Originally scheduled to begin on June 30, construction will now start on or around July 7. The project aims to replace the bridge over Fall Kill Creek, providing significant safety upgrades and ensuring the structure's durability for at least the next 50 years.
According to city officials, the project is expected to last approximately eight months, with completion anticipated by the end of February 2026. Residents and drivers in the area are advised to watch for electronic signs that will indicate specific road closure dates. Detour routes will be implemented to guide traffic during the construction period.
The City of Poughkeepsie has notified local police, fire departments, and emergency services about the project. The Poughkeepsie City School District Transportation System has also been informed, as the construction will overlap with a significant portion of the 2026 academic year.
The bridge replacement will address structural deficiencies and enhance operational performance, extending the bridge's lifecycle while minimizing future maintenance costs. Residents have expressed relief and satisfaction that the project is finally moving forward, with one local commenting on the poor condition of the current bridge.
