The grand opening of Greene County's new tourism and welcome center in Leeds is scheduled for Thursday, July 3, at 11 a.m. This state-of-the-art facility, located at Exit 21 off the New York State Thruway, is part of a $2 million development project aimed at boosting local tourism and the economy.

The project began in 2016 when county officials acquired underutilized properties around Exit 21. In 2017, an agreement with Stewart's Shops facilitated a site swap, allowing for the construction of new facilities for both Stewart's and the tourism center. The previous visitor facility was demolished in 2023 to make room for a new Stewart's store, which opened last summer. Stewart's then donated its old building for the new visitor center, according to News10.

The new center features expanded parking, a large atrium, and an exterior pavilion offering views of the Great Northern Catskill Mountains. It aims to provide easy access to amenities, hospitality, and information for travelers. Greene County Legislature Chair Patrick Linger emphasized the importance of increasing available hotel rooms for business and leisure travelers as part of the project, which also includes a new 92-room Hampton by Hilton hotel.

Tourism Director Patty Austin expressed pride in the new facility, stating that it showcases the best of the region and ensures every traveler feels welcome. The center is designed to inspire exploration and support local businesses, as reported by the Greene County Economic Development Corporation.

The opening of the tourism center is expected to play a key role in attracting visitors and businesses, driving the local economy. In 2023, tourism contributed approximately $305 million to the county through lodging, entertainment, food, retail, and transportation, according to the Greene County Legislature.
