New York Republican Representative Elise Stefanik is reportedly preparing to run for governor, aiming to challenge current Governor Kathy Hochul. Stefanik, who represents New York's 21st congressional district, has raised millions of dollars for her campaign, though she has not yet announced an official timeline for her candidacy. According to Times Union, Stefanik expressed her intentions during a speech at a state GOP gala, declaring it is "time to save New York."

Stefanik's potential gubernatorial bid follows the withdrawal of her nomination for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a move intended to maintain the slim Republican majority in the House of Representatives. President Donald Trump had nominated her for the position, but the nomination was withdrawn to prevent a special election in her district. Trump praised Stefanik on Truth Social, calling her "GREAT!!!" and hinting at future roles in his administration.

New York has not elected a Republican governor since George Pataki in 2006, but recent political shifts suggest a more competitive landscape. In 2022, former U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin came within six points of defeating Hochul. Stefanik's strong fundraising abilities and high name recognition make her a prominent contender for the Republican nomination.

Assemblyman Chris Tague, who represents part of the twin counties, has voiced his support for Stefanik's potential run, emphasizing the need for her leadership in New York. While Stefanik has not confirmed her candidacy, her actions and statements suggest she is seriously considering the opportunity.
