The City of Poughkeepsie, is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance roadway safety and improve the management of city vehicles. The city has implemented a system called Samsara, which uses AI dash cams to provide real-time oversight by collecting live data such as vehicle location and detecting harsh driving and speeding incidents. This system aims to enhance safety and efficiency, ultimately saving taxpayer money by reducing liability.
According to Samsara, the AI dash cams can instantly review safety events with 360° HD footage uploaded to the cloud within minutes. The technology also allows managers to pinpoint incident details using GPS-based Proximity Search and helps drivers self-coach before a safety event is sent to a manager.
Samsara's recent innovations, as reported by Samsara's press release, include AI-powered safety tools and recognition features that reward safe driving and detect risky events like phone use or speeding. These advancements are part of Samsara's efforts to transform the physical operations industry by enhancing safety and efficiency.
The new AI-powered solutions have been designed to address the increasing dangers of driving, which ranks among the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the U.S. Over the past decade, fatal crashes have increased by 49%, and associated insurance premiums have risen by 40%. Samsara's technology aims to mitigate these risks by providing comprehensive safety features.
In addition to improving road safety, Samsara has introduced new commercial fleet routing and navigation capabilities to ensure compliance, reduce costs, and improve customer satisfaction, as noted by Automotive Fleet. These features are part of a broader strategy to help organizations operate smarter and protect frontline workers.
