Residents of Saugerties are being cautioned after a bear was spotted in the area on Friday (June 27). The bear was seen roaming down Main Street, near Mountainview Cemetery and nearby homes, shortly after noon. Local authorities have shared video footage of the sighting across the town's online platforms, urging residents to exercise caution.
The Town of Saugerties has provided guidance on how to stay safe during bear encounters. This incident follows a similar sighting in Peekskill, where a bear was seen near Woodside Elementary School on Thursday (June 26). According to Peekskill Police Lieutenant Adam Renwick, officers managed to guide the bear back into the woods, and there was no immediate threat to the public.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) offers advice to reduce the likelihood of bears entering residential areas. They recommend securing garbage, removing bird feeders, and cleaning grills to minimize attractants. Residents are encouraged to report bear sightings to local authorities and avoid approaching the animals.
As bear sightings become more common in populated areas, officials emphasize the importance of community awareness and preparedness. Anyone who encounters a bear is advised to remain calm and slowly back away, ensuring the bear has a clear escape route.
