The New York State Police (NYSP) will launch a targeted initiative for the Fourth of July weekend, focusing on reducing impaired driving. The statewide STOP-DWI campaign will run from Thursday (July 3) through Sunday (July 6), featuring increased police visibility and engagement. Local police departments across New York, including those in Dutchess County, will participate in this unified effort to prevent alcohol-related crashes and injuries.
According to Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino, "As we celebrate our nation’s independence, it’s important to protect the safety of those around us on our roadways. If you choose to drink this Fourth of July weekend, please plan ahead for a safe ride home."
The Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous holidays for drivers and passengers, with data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicating 2,653 traffic crash fatalities from 2019 to 2023 during this period. In 2023 alone, 617 drivers lost their lives in traffic crashes over the holiday.
The STOP-DWI campaign is part of a series of enforcement efforts organized by the New York State STOP-DWI Association and supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Similar campaigns occur during other high-risk times, such as Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, and Halloween. The initiative aims to deter impaired driving through strong visibility and public outreach.
Motorists are encouraged to plan for a sober ride home, with resources like the "Have a Plan" app available to help find safe transportation options.
