The Poughkeepsie Social Security office reopened today (June 30) at a new location on Academy Street in Poughkeepsie. This comes after a temporary closure for renovations that began in January. The office, previously located on Main Street, now operates from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

During the closure, Poughkeepsie residents were directed to the Middletown office for in-person services. Concerns arose when the office appeared on a Department of Government Efficiency website, suggesting a possible permanent closure. However, the U.S. Social Security Administration later confirmed that the Poughkeepsie office was not on a permanent closure list.

The new office aims to improve service efficiency by allowing customers to schedule appointments for various services, reducing wait times. However, walk-ins are still welcome. The local staff is particularly attentive to vulnerable populations, including people with disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance.

For appointments, customers can call the local office at 1-877-405-6747 or the national line at 1-800-772-1213, which offers a call-back feature. Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals can use the TTY number, 1-800-325-0778. Many services are also available online at ssa.gov, where users can create a personalized account for various Social Security services.
