The Athens Community Pool in Athens closed just one day after opening for the summer season due to a mechanical issue. The pool, which opened on Saturday (June 28), was shut down on Sunday after a major leak was discovered in the main drain. The Athens Recreation Association reported that while addressing this issue, several other infrastructure problems were found in the 56-year-old facility.
The pool's closure has raised concerns about whether it will reopen this season. The Athens Recreation Association is currently assessing the financial implications of the repairs needed. "We want to be able to open for the season, but we have to assess the financial realities," the association told NEWS10. An update on the pool's future is expected by the weekend.
The pool's opening was initially made possible by the efforts of volunteers who stepped in to prevent its closure due to a lack of resources. Despite these efforts, the mechanical issues have halted its operations. If the pool cannot reopen, the association has stated that it will refund all membership fees.
