Traffic on the New York State Bridge Authority's network of bridges over the Hudson River has exceeded pre-COVID levels for the first time since the pandemic began. In 2024, the authority reported a record-breaking year with over 64.4 million vehicles crossing its five bridges, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by 651,718 crossings, according to Mid-Hudson News.
The bridges, which include the Bear Mountain, Newburgh-Beacon, Mid-Hudson, Kingston-Rhinecliff, and Rip Van Winkle bridges, generated over $82 million in toll revenue in 2024. This represents an 8.3% increase from the previous record in 2023. The revenue supports ongoing capital improvements and maintenance, ensuring the bridges remain in excellent condition.
Dr. Minosca Alcantara, Executive Director of the New York State Bridge Authority, expressed gratitude for the return of traffic levels, emphasizing the importance of these bridges to the Hudson Valley's economy and connectivity. The Bear Mountain Bridge, celebrating its centennial year, was highlighted as a critical piece of infrastructure.
The increase in traffic and revenue allows the authority to maintain low toll rates, which were last adjusted in May 2023. The current rates are $1.65 for E-ZPass users and $2.15 for Tolls by Mail customers, with higher rates for commercial vehicles. These funds are vital for projects like the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge re-decking, completed in 2022.
