The Catskill Police Department has introduced a new drug take back box, now available for public use in their lobby. The box is accessible 24/7, allowing community members to anonymously dispose of unused, expired, or unwanted prescription drugs without any questions asked. This initiative aims to prevent drug misuse and accidental poisoning.
The introduction of the drug take back box follows a recent string of suspected overdoses in the area, highlighting the urgent need for safe drug disposal options. The New York State Drug Take Back Act mandates that manufacturers establish and manage approved drug take back programs, ensuring safe collection and disposal of unused medications. According to the New York State Department of Health, these programs are designed to be free of charge to consumers.
The Catskill Police Department's effort is part of a broader initiative in Greene and Columbia counties, where several law enforcement agencies and pharmacies have installed similar medication drop boxes. These boxes help reduce prescription drug abuse by providing a secure and environmentally safe way to dispose of medications. The Greene Health Network advises against flushing unused drugs, as it pollutes water supplies, or throwing them in the trash, which can attract thieves and pets.
Residents are encouraged to use the drop box to help combat drug abuse in the community. The medications collected will be incinerated at a licensed facility, ensuring they are disposed of safely and responsibly.
