The Mid Hudson Valley region is bracing for more hot and humid weather today, with a heat advisory in effect from noon until 8 p.m. The National Weather Service has issued the advisory for multiple counties, including Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Putnam. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s, with heat index values ranging from 95 to 100 degrees.

Areas like Poughkeepsie and Kingston will experience these high temperatures, making it feel even hotter due to the heat index. This extreme heat poses a significant risk for heat-related illnesses, prompting local health officials to advise residents to stay indoors, limit physical activity, and remain hydrated. Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester's health commissioner, recommends drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, and taking frequent breaks from outdoor work if it cannot be rescheduled.

Cooling centers have been set up across the region to provide relief from the heat. However, some local beaches, including Hudson Park East Beach and Harbor Island Beach, remain closed due to high bacteria levels and harmful algae blooms.

The heat wave is part of a larger pattern affecting much of the East Coast, with record-breaking temperatures reported in major cities like New York City and Philadelphia. Relief is expected as temperatures are forecasted to drop into the 70s on Thursday (July 17), with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms.
