The Town of New Paltz has initiated an inspection of the Springtown Road Bridge, which spans the Wallkill River. This bridge, known for its appearance in the film "A Quiet Place," requires attention after decades of use and exposure to the elements. With support from the Hudson River Valley Greenway, a feasibility study is underway to plan for its preservation. Engineers will be on-site this week to conduct the inspection, as announced by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust.
The bridge, which is 325 feet long, is a popular destination for walkers and is owned and maintained by the town. The inspection aims to assess the current condition of the bridge and determine the necessary steps for its preservation. The Hudson River Valley Greenway is leading the feasibility study to ensure the bridge's longevity and safety for future use.
The inspection comes as part of broader efforts in the region to maintain and improve infrastructure. Nearby, Route 213 near Route 32 in Ulster County is undergoing a significant road improvement project, which includes work on a bridge that is part of the New York State Thruway. This project, approved by New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, has a budget of $23.7 million and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The Springtown Road Bridge inspection reflects the ongoing commitment to maintaining vital infrastructure in the Hudson Valley area, ensuring safety and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
