The Saugerties Town Board is responding to the arrest of Officer Sydney Mills, who was taken into custody earlier this week for alleged sexual misconduct with a minor. Mills, 53, faces charges including second-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape, as reported by the Ulster County District Attorney's office. The alleged incidents occurred in 2022 and involved a child between the ages of 14 and 15, with at least one incident happening while Mills was in uniform.

The Saugerties Police Department initiated the investigation after receiving a complaint, leading to Mills' arrest by the Ulster County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team. Mills is currently held in the Ulster County Jail without bail. Saugerties Police Chief K.J. Swart emphasized the department's commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, "We understand that public trust is essential for our agency's effectiveness."

The case is being prosecuted by the Ulster County Family and Children Advocacy Center, with Special Victims Bureau Chief Jenna Hastings overseeing the proceedings. Hastings acknowledged the victim's courage in coming forward and highlighted the importance of holding Mills accountable. Ulster County DA Emmanuel Nneji expressed disappointment in Mills, stating, "A man sworn to protect the most vulnerable of our community dishonored that oath."

The Saugerties Town Board has expressed its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the victim and those affected. Mills is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.
