The Saugerties Police Department is advising residents to report crime tips directly to authorized authorities, rather than through social media channels or third parties. This guidance comes in response to an increase in social media posts offering to act as intermediaries between crime victims and law enforcement. While these efforts may be well-intentioned, the police emphasize the importance of ensuring that information is handled securely and appropriately.
In a related matter, the department is urging anyone with information regarding Police Officer Sydney Mills, who faces charges of sexual abuse, to contact the Ulster County District Attorney's office directly. Mills, a part-time officer, was arrested following an investigation into alleged illegal sexual acts committed during his employment. He has been charged with multiple sex crimes, including second-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape. Mills is currently being held in the Ulster County Jail without bail.
According to Crimewatch.net, the investigation began when a Saugerties officer reported the allegations to the Chief of Police, who then collaborated with the Ulster County District Attorney's Office for a thorough investigation. The Ulster County Family and Children Advocacy Center also assisted in the investigation.
Special Victims Bureau Chief Jenna Hastings praised the victim's courage in coming forward and stated, "The defendant's actions undermine the incredible work of other police officers in our community." The case has drawn attention to previous allegations of misconduct within the Saugerties Police Department, as reported by Times Union.
