Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) buses have seen a significant rise in ridership during the first half of 2025. Over 281,000 free rides were provided, a notable increase from the 251,000 rides during the same period last year. The surge in ridership follows the introduction of free rides in October 2022, which has consistently boosted the number of passengers using the service.

Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger emphasized the importance of accessible transportation, stating that it expands educational and employment opportunities for residents. The free bus service is part of a broader initiative to improve public transportation and make it more accessible to all residents, especially those without personal vehicles. According to the Daily Freeman, the increase in ridership is part of a growing trend since the free rides began.

In addition to regular transit services, Ulster County has also reintroduced the 'Nature Bus' for the 2025 season. This initiative, launched during Earth Week, allows residents and visitors to explore the county's natural attractions, such as Sojourner Truth State Park and Mohonk Preserve, free of charge. The Nature Bus operates every Saturday through September, providing an eco-friendly travel option for those without cars. Ulster County's official website highlights the collaboration with local parks and tourism departments to make this service accessible to everyone.

The continued rise in bus ridership reflects the success of Ulster County's efforts to promote sustainable and accessible transportation options for its residents.
