Residents of New Paltz remain under a boil water advisory that was issued on Friday (July 18). The advisory came after routine monitoring revealed elevated levels of coliform bacteria in the village's water supply. Though the coliform standard was not violated, the presence of coliforms at four out of eight tested sites prompted the precautionary measure.
According to the Town of New Paltz, residents should boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. Bottled water certified by the New York State Department of Health is also recommended until further notice.
The advisory remains in effect as water mains were flushed over the weekend, and additional samples were taken. The Ulster County Health Department is assessing the results, which will determine when the advisory can be lifted.
The advisory is expected to remain in place until at least Wednesday (July 23), provided no further bacterial contamination is detected. Residents are encouraged to share this information, especially with those who may not receive it directly, such as people in apartments, nursing homes, and schools.
