Hudson Valley Congressman Mike Lawler announced he will not run for governor of New York next year. Instead, the Republican plans to seek re-election in his current position, representing a key battleground district that includes all or parts of Rockland, Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties.

According to the New York Times, the Trump Administration urged Lawler to focus on retaining his congressional seat to help maintain the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Lawler's decision comes as the political landscape heats up, with potential challengers considering their options for the upcoming gubernatorial race.

New York Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is also contemplating a run against Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. However, Stefanik has stated she will not make a decision until the fall, leaving the Republican field open for now. Lawler's choice to remain in his congressional role highlights the strategic importance of his district in the broader national political context.
