Ulster County has announced the allocation of $586,256 in grants to nine local farms as part of its inaugural Farm Viability & Sustainability Grant Program. This initiative, funded by the Agricultural Crisis Relief Program under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), aims to bolster farm businesses, enhance energy efficiency, and build climate resilience. The program, managed by the Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development Corporation (HVADC), provides grants ranging from $25,000 to $75,000 to support local farmers in maintaining viable and resilient operations.

County Executive Jen Metzger emphasized the importance of farming to Ulster County's economy and food security, stating, "The purpose of these grants is to help with farm investments that support long-term economic and environmental sustainability." The program aligns with the county’s updated Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan, which focuses on preserving farmland and promoting sustainability.

Among the grant recipients is Balsam Ridge Farm in Clintondale, which will use the funds to expand into garlic production and improve infrastructure. Catskill Wagyu at Hilltop Farm in Accord plans to upgrade its milking operations and reduce water usage. Honeybee Sun Farm in Kerhonkson will address flood-related damage with a contour chestnut orchard and an embankment pond.

Other projects include energy-efficient upgrades at Hudson Valley Grown in Milton, a new washing and packing facility at Long Season Farm in Kerhonkson, and solar panel installation at Sugarshack Mushrooms Farm in Highland. Treadlight Farm and Westwind Orchard, both in Accord, will also benefit from the grants, with plans for electric vehicles and frost-protection systems.

The initiative reflects Ulster County's commitment to supporting its agricultural community while addressing environmental challenges. For more information about the program, visit the Ulster County website.
