The Saugerties school board has approved the hiring of an investigator following the arrest of former high school coach Reid Kappler. Kappler, 32, was arrested last week on 18 charges, including third-degree rape, after being accused of sexually assaulting two female students between 2023 and 2024. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody at the Ulster County Jail without bail.

The Ulster County District Attorney's Office announced that Kappler, who was a wrestling coach and custodian at Saugerties Central School District, engaged in sexual conduct with two students aged 15 and 16. The case against Kappler emerged during an investigation of Saugerties police officer Sydney Mills, who was also indicted on sex offense charges.

Ulster County Special Victims Bureau Chief Jenna Hastings stated, "He abused the trust of the community by engaging in sexual crimes with two students." According to the Times Union, the school district is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students. Superintendent Daniel Erceg emphasized that all allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

Kappler is scheduled to appear in court on October 16. The school board's decision to hire an investigator reflects their commitment to addressing the allegations and maintaining trust within the community. Spectrum Local News reports that anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Ulster County District Attorney's Office.
