The village of Athens is urging residents to conserve water due to drought conditions affecting the local reservoir. Village officials have asked residents to limit water usage, such as only watering plants when necessary and refraining from using lawn sprinklers. Mayor Serrago emphasized the importance of water conservation at home to benefit the entire community.

The drought alert comes despite a recent statewide return to normal water conditions. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), all 62 counties, including New York City, have been updated from a "Drought Watch" to "Normal" status after assessing recent precipitation and elevated water levels. However, localized dry conditions may persist, prompting continued conservation efforts (DEC reports).

Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams have previously highlighted the importance of water conservation, especially in areas under drought warning. They encouraged residents to adopt water-saving measures to prevent more severe shortages (Governor's office update).

The U.S. Drought Monitor continues to track drought conditions across the state, using various indicators such as precipitation levels and groundwater data. Despite improvements, the need for responsible water use remains crucial to ensure adequate supply for all uses (Drought Monitor data).
