Residents of New Paltz should not be alarmed if they see smoke coming from sewers next week. The town, in collaboration with Walden Environmental Engineering, will conduct smoke testing on the sewer system to identify storm water inflow sources into the sanitary system. The testing will begin at Meadowbrook Circle at 8 a.m. on Wednesday (August 6) and proceed from north to south.

The smoke testing is part of an effort to improve the efficiency of the town's sewer system by locating and addressing areas where storm water may be entering the sanitary system. This process helps prevent potential overflows and ensures the system operates effectively.

Residents are advised that the smoke used in the testing is non-toxic and harmless. It is expected to exit through manholes, building vents, and other openings. However, if residents notice smoke entering their homes, they should check for any plumbing issues or contact local authorities for assistance.

For more information about the smoke testing, residents can visit the Town of New Paltz's official website or contact the town office at (845) 255-0604.
