A man was rescued late Friday night (August 1) after falling approximately 150 feet into an abandoned silo at the old Lehigh Cement Company site in Catskill. Emergency crews from multiple counties responded to the incident on Route 9W, where they found the man about 120 feet down through a small opening.
According to Times Union, the rescue operation involved a rope system using a TerrAdaptor, a portable anchor system, to lower a rescuer into the silo. The rescuer harnessed the victim and lifted him to safety in just 15 minutes. The man sustained minor injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment.
The Cedar Grove Fire Company noted that such rescues are unusual and emphasized the dangers of exploring abandoned sites. The plant, which has been closed for years, was originally opened in 1902 and has since become a hazardous site for urban explorers.
Authorities have warned the public to stay away from these dangerous areas, as the man involved in the incident was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries.
