Dutchess County is investing $500,000 in enhancing eight local senior centers. Announced by County Executive Sue Serino, the funding comes from the 2025 Dutchess County Municipal Investment Grant (MIG) Program. This initiative aims to improve facilities and create welcoming spaces for older adults to engage in social and recreational activities.
The grant will fund various projects, including renovating bathrooms, upgrading HVAC systems, and enhancing accessibility. For example, the Beacon Housing Authority will receive $24,000 to renovate bathrooms, install a defibrillator, and add a gazebo at the Friendship Center. According to Spectrum Local News, Veronica Schetter, Executive Director of the Beacon Housing Authority, stated that the funds will significantly improve programming and safety.
The First Presbyterian Church of Pleasant Valley will use $88,000 to upgrade flooring, stairs, and air conditioning in the fellowship hall. The Red Hook Community Center, Inc. will receive $160,000 for bathroom renovations and accessibility improvements. Other projects include roof replacements, kitchen expansions, and new appliances across various centers.
According to the Dutchess County Executive's Office, the funding is part of a broader commitment to ensuring older adults have places where they feel valued and connected. Sue Serino emphasized the importance of these centers in providing social opportunities and support for the community's seniors.
The grants are available to non-profit organizations and municipalities that own or lease senior centers, operating at least 12 hours per week. These improvements aim to enrich the lives of Dutchess County's older adults by offering safe and inviting spaces for socialization and recreation.
