Poughkeepsie City Councilman Christopher Grant is facing serious legal trouble after being charged with assault following an incident at the Poughkeepsie Waterfront on Saturday (August 2). The 37-year-old councilman, representing the Sixth Ward, allegedly punched 69-year-old Winston Strachan during an argument. Strachan was treated at a local hospital and later filed a complaint with the police.
The charge against Grant was initially for harassment, but due to the age difference between Grant and the victim, it was elevated to a violent felony. According to New York law, assault charges can be upgraded if the victim is 65 years or older and the assailant is more than ten years younger. If convicted, Grant could face a prison sentence ranging from two to seven years.
During his arraignment on Thursday (August 7), Grant was represented by the Dutchess County Public Defender’s Office. City Court Judge Scott Volkmann released him under the supervision of the Dutchess County Probation Department, requiring him to report weekly. Grant was also issued a full order of protection, preventing any contact with Strachan, and temporary orders of protection for three witnesses of the incident.
Grant's next court appearance is scheduled for two weeks from now. The situation has stirred significant attention in Poughkeepsie, as residents await the outcome of the legal proceedings.
