Preparations are in full swing for the 30th annual Kingston Artists Soapbox Derby, set to take place on Sunday (August 17) in Kingston. The event, which began in 1995, has become a cherished tradition in the Hudson Valley region, drawing thousands of residents and tourists to the historic Rondout District.
The derby will feature nearly 20 entries this year, with participants competing for first, second, and third place trophies in various categories. A total of $2,500 in prizes will be awarded. The parade of soapbox creations will start at 1 p.m., following registration at 11 a.m.
According to the event's official website, the derby is a celebration of creativity and community spirit, uniting professional artists, families, and local organizations in a unique display of kinetic sculpture. The day will be filled with music and live performances, culminating in an entertaining awards ceremony at TR Gallo Park. Spectators will have the opportunity to view the soapbox cars lined up post-parade on West Strand.
The event is supported by sponsors such as the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture & History and Rondout Savings Bank. The derby encourages participation from kids, nonprofits, local businesses, and artists, who can craft their own entries or build a team to create inspired designs. More details and updates can be found on the Kingston Happenings website.
