A 62-year-old hiker from New Jersey was rescued by helicopter from Wittenberg Mountain in Shandaken last Saturday (August 9). The hiker, who remains unidentified, experienced fatigue and illness, including vomiting, and was unable to descend from the summit.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation coordinated the rescue operation. A state police medic and several rangers assisted in the effort, safely transporting the hiker to the Catskills Visitor Center in Mount Tremper via helicopter.
Wittenberg Mountain, part of the Catskill Mountains, is a popular hiking destination known for its challenging trails and scenic views. However, the terrain can be demanding, especially for those not fully prepared for the physical exertion required.
The hiker is now recovering, and no further details about their condition have been released. This incident highlights the importance of proper preparation and awareness of one's physical limits when hiking in mountainous regions.
