A public hearing is scheduled for tonight (August 25) in Catskill to discuss a proposal for a new AutoZone store. The store is set to open in the former Rite Aid location, which has been vacant since 2018. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Catskill Senior Center.

The former Rite Aid site, located at 226 West Bridge Street, was closed after Walgreens Boots Alliance acquired several Rite Aid stores in 2017. The building, built in 1997, spans over 11,000 square feet and sits on 1.8 acres. It is currently valued at $2.1 million and is in good condition, according to Greene County property records.

The proposal does not require any new construction, as the site is already zoned for retail. Village Board of Trustees President Natasha Law expressed excitement about revitalizing the space, stating, "I’m glad to see that building will finally breathe life again." Vice President Joseph Kozloski added that utilizing the existing structure is preferable to constructing a new one.

While some residents question the need for another auto parts store, given the presence of NAPA Auto Parts and Advanced Auto Parts in the area, others see it as a positive development. Law noted that the area primarily hosts large chain businesses, making AutoZone a suitable addition.

The village board does not control business openings as long as they comply with zoning regulations. The decision on the AutoZone proposal will be made after tonight's hearing, marking the final step for site plan approval.
