A new scam has emerged in the Mid-Hudson region, targeting residents in Putnam, Southern Dutchess, and Northern Westchester. According to the Mid-Hudson News, scammers are contacting victims by phone, falsely claiming they have an outstanding balance that must be paid immediately. Victims are instructed to withdraw large sums of money and meet a "courier" to hand over the cash. Trooper Krystal Paolicelli, Public Information Officer for Troop K, warns that this is a fraudulent scheme.

Troop K Major Mark Nielson urges residents to remain vigilant and not provide personal or financial information over the phone or email. He advises, "If someone contacts you requesting that you withdraw money or hand over cash — it’s a scam." Residents are encouraged to contact the New York State Police or their local police agency if they receive suspicious calls or emails.

The scam preys on fear and urgency, making it essential for residents to verify any claims before taking action. The New York State Police emphasize the importance of protecting oneself and loved ones from such fraudulent activities.
