Kingston is implementing a rigorous school zone traffic enforcement program to ensure student safety as the new school year begins. Mayor Steven Noble and the Kingston Police Department announced that the Traffic Safety Unit will focus on enforcing the 15 mph speed limit in school zones starting Wednesday (September 3) and continuing for at least the first week of school.

The Traffic Safety Unit, formed in January 2025, has officers trained in various areas including commercial vehicle enforcement, crash management, and bicycle safety. Since its inception, the unit has conducted over 3,400 stops, issued more than 3,600 summonses, and made 98 arrests. Mayor Noble emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "The safety of our school children is our top priority."

Police Chief Egidio Tinti highlighted the unit's role in ensuring children travel safely to and from school. The officers will concentrate on school zones, crosswalks, and bus stops, reminding drivers to adhere to traffic laws.

In addition to the enforcement program, Kingston plans to install speed cameras in select school zones by the start of the 2025-2026 school year, as reported by the Daily Freeman. This move is part of a broader effort to improve road safety, which includes a city-wide 25 mph speed limit and several road safety projects.
