The Town of Hurley in New York is cautioning bikers and hikers about the dangers of crossing Route 209, especially where it intersects with Russell Road. The Town of Hurley Highway Department has placed signs, warning flags, and road cones on the O&W Rail Trail to alert pedestrians and cyclists of the potential hazards posed by nearby motor vehicle traffic.
Route 209, which has a speed limit of 55 mph, presents a risk for trail users, particularly those wearing headphones who may not hear oncoming vehicles. There have been several near misses reported where vehicles had to brake suddenly to avoid accidents. Trail users are urged to heed the warnings and check for traffic before crossing Russell Road.
The warning comes after recent tragic incidents on Route 209 when two people died in separate accidents on the road over Labor Day weekend. A 58-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman lost their lives in two different crashes. The New York State Police are investigating these incidents and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
The Town of Hurley emphasizes the importance of safety for all trail users and encourages vigilance when near the busy highway.
