The Hudson Valley is holding ceremonies today (Thursday, September 11) to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. These events mark the 24th anniversary of the tragic day when thousands lost their lives in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In Poughkeepsie, the Dutchess County Family Court will host a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. on the courthouse steps. The event will include remarks from Judge Jeffrey Martin, a ceremonial flag lowering, and a moment of silence. In Kingston, a commemoration will take place at Firemen’s Park, featuring the Kingston High School choir and Ulster AOH bagpipes, with Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger speaking.

Other ceremonies are scheduled across the region, including in Mount Vernon, Newburgh, Yonkers, Haverstraw, New Paltz, and Saugerties. In New Paltz, a ceremony will be held at the 9/11 memorial on North Putt Corners Road and Henry W. DuBois Drive, which features a cutting from the original "Survivor Tree" from Ground Zero.

Today is also recognized as a National Day of Service, encouraging Americans to volunteer in their communities. Events are organized at national cemeteries nationwide, where volunteers can participate in activities such as headstone cleaning and beautification to honor those who served the country.
