The Saugerties Central School District has placed Superintendent Daniel Erceg on paid administrative leave following complaints of improper behavior within the district. The decision was made by the Board of Education on Tuesday (September 9) during an executive session lasting nearly two hours. The board aims to ensure that the ongoing investigation into these complaints remains fair and impartial.
The investigation follows serious allegations against a former wrestling coach at Saugerties High School. The coach was charged in July with sexually assaulting two female students on the wrestling team. Board President Jeffery Riozzi stated that the leave is part of the district's commitment to a transparent review process. He emphasized the need to respect privacy laws and avoid speculation during the investigation.
Deputy Superintendent Gwendolyn Roraback will serve as interim superintendent during Erceg's absence. Erceg, a 2002 graduate of Saugerties High School, has been in the role since March 2023.
The situation has raised concerns about a "cover-up" culture within the district, as mentioned by Ulster County District Attorney Emmanuel Nneji. He highlighted a longstanding issue where administrators reportedly operated under fear of reporting abuse.
The community has expressed distress over the allegations. Eighth-grade student Eve Ruberg shared her concerns at a recent board meeting, describing feelings of being unsafe due to the incidents. Trustee Michelle Gramoglia acknowledged Ruberg's testimony, expressing a desire to address these concerns within the district.
The board has not disclosed specific details of the allegations, and the investigation is ongoing. The community awaits further developments as the district aims to resolve the issue in a manner that ensures safety and trust for students and staff.
