An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a motorcycle crash that claimed the life of Sergeant Nigel Barnett, a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police. The accident occurred on the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill early Tuesday morning (September 16). Barnett, 49, was riding his 2025 Ducati motorcycle when he lost control, was ejected, and struck a guardrail. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sergeant Barnett, who resided in Poughkeepsie, served as the station commander of Troop K in Cortlandt. According to the Mid Hudson News, the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m., and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences, stating, "A 19-year veteran, Sgt. Barnett devoted his career to protecting others and serving his community with selfless dedication." Charles Murphy, president of the Troopers' Police Benevolent Association, described Barnett as a "dedicated public servant" who embodied the best of public service, as reported by the Times Union.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reported that Barnett's colleagues and community members are mourning his loss, highlighting his courage and compassion both on and off duty. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash.
