An inmate at Woodbourne Correctional Facility was discovered unconscious but breathing in his cell on Sunday evening (September 21). First responders arrived shortly after 6 p.m. following a report of a prison hanging. The inmate was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center for further treatment, according to a spokesman from the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
The incident is currently under investigation. The facility, located in New York's Hudson Valley, is known for its medium-security status. The identity of the inmate has not been disclosed, and no further details about his condition have been released.
The Woodbourne Correctional Facility has been in operation since 1933 and houses approximately 840 inmates. It is one of several state prisons in New York that have faced scrutiny over inmate safety and conditions.
