Congressman Pat Ryan is leading efforts to reopen the Social Security office in Newburgh after its closure in July 2024. The office was relocated 25 miles away to the Town of Wallkill, causing significant inconvenience for local seniors who rely on its services. On Monday (September 22), Ryan rallied with community members, including local officials and clergy, at the former site to demand the office's return.
Ryan has been a vocal advocate for increased Social Security services in Orange County, emphasizing the necessity of local access to in-person services for seniors. He introduced the "Protecting Social Security Act" to ensure that all counties in his district have operational Social Security offices. Ryan stated, "Seniors deserve to feel secure in their retirement," highlighting the importance of easy access to benefits.
Community leaders, such as Bishop Jeffrey Woody, echoed these sentiments, stressing the moral imperative to care for the elderly. Natasha Pretty-Whitney from the Town of Wallkill office and State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson also emphasized the need for local services, particularly given the challenges of internet fraud and the complexity of online systems.
The closure of the Newburgh office has forced many seniors to travel long distances or navigate complicated online systems to access their benefits. Ryan's efforts aim to alleviate these burdens and ensure that vulnerable populations in the Hudson Valley have the support they need.
