Memorial services for Sergeant Nigel Barnett, a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police, begin today in East Fishkill. Sergeant Barnett tragically died in a motorcycle crash on the Taconic State Parkway on Tuesday (September 16) when he lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a guardrail.

Sergeant Barnett, a 49-year-old resident of Poughkeepsie, was on his way to work when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Barnett had a distinguished career with the New York State Police, serving as a station commander at State Police Cortlandt, Troop K, at the time of his death.

The wake will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction, followed by a funeral service on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Faith Assembly of God in Poughkeepsie. The New York State Police community, local leaders, and residents are expected to attend to honor Barnett's dedicated service.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Barnett's colleagues remember him as a committed officer who served with distinction. The New York State Police expressed "profound sadness" over his loss, sending "heartfelt condolences" to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Barnett is survived by his son, Nigel Barnett III, his parents, siblings, and extended family. Memorial donations can be made to support his son's college education, with checks payable to Nigel Barnett III, sent to McHoul Funeral Home.
