A mysterious illness continues to affect Fishkill Correctional Facility, with recent incidents involving both inmates and staff. On Thursday (September 25), an inmate displayed symptoms of intoxication, leading to a medical examination. Subsequently, four correctional officers also fell ill and required hospital evaluation, according to Mid-Hudson News.

The source of the illness remains unidentified, but it has been linked to exposure to an unknown substance. During a search of the inmate's cell, officers discovered paper soaked in an unidentified substance, which was sent for further testing. The Poughkeepsie Journal reported that the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has implemented new safety measures, including holding printed materials and tobacco products for additional screening.

The illness has resulted in symptoms such as high blood pressure, nausea, and blurred vision among affected individuals. In some cases, Narcan was administered to reverse the effects. The entire state prison system is experiencing an increase in overdose rates, with the cause still under investigation, as noted by Mid-Hudson News.

DOCCS Commissioner Daniel Martuscello has issued memos to staff and inmates outlining preventive measures. If the problem persists, further restrictions on package room items may be considered. The investigation is ongoing, with the involvement of state police and K-9 units.
