New York State is set to begin mailing inflation refund checks to eligible residents starting Friday (September 26). This initiative, part of the 2025–2026 state budget, aims to provide relief to New Yorkers who have faced increased sales taxes due to inflation. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that over 8.2 million households will receive these one-time payments, with deliveries continuing throughout October and November.
Residents do not need to take any action to receive a check. Eligibility is based on the 2023 state income tax information. To qualify, individuals must have been full-year residents of New York and have filed a 2023 tax return. The refund amount varies depending on income and filing status. For example, married couples filing jointly with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $150,000 or less will receive $400. Single filers with an AGI of $75,000 or less will receive $200.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of these checks, stating, "This is your money and we're putting it back in your pockets." The initiative is part of broader efforts to help residents manage the rising cost of living, which includes tax cuts for the middle class and expanded child tax credits.
The New York State Office of Taxation and Finance will mail checks to the address associated with the most recent tax return filed. If residents have moved since filing, they are encouraged to update their address with the Department to ensure delivery.
