A tropical storm watch is in effect for eastern Florida as a storm system, currently known as Tropical Depression Nine, is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Imelda by the end of the weekend. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm was located northwest of the eastern tip of Cuba, moving northwest at approximately 7 mph. It is forecast to cross the central and northwestern Bahamas this weekend before approaching the southeastern U.S. coast early next week.

The NHC has issued a tropical storm watch from the Palm Beach-Martin County line to the Flagler-Volusia County line, indicating that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, storm surges, and high winds to the southeastern U.S. coast, potentially reaching Category 1 hurricane intensity. The NHC warns of flash and urban flooding in eastern Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and the Bahamas, with mudslides possible in higher terrains.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency, urging residents to prepare for significant wind, heavy rainfall, and flooding. He emphasized the importance of staying informed and making necessary preparations.

The storm's path and intensity remain uncertain due to potential interactions with Hurricane Humberto, a Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic.

Residents along the southeastern U.S. coast are advised to monitor updates and alerts from official sources as the storm progresses.
