An effort by Congressman Josh Riley to reverse rate hikes by Central Hudson Electric and Gas Corporation is encountering resistance. Riley, representing New York's 19th Congressional District, filed a petition with the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to reconsider the approved rate increases. However, both Central Hudson and the Department of Public Service argue that Riley's petition lacks the necessary legal basis for a rehearing.

According to the Daily Freeman, the utility company and the department filed motions on September 25, stating that Riley's petition does not present any new evidence or errors in law that would justify a rehearing. Central Hudson emphasized that the rate hikes, effective this month, were deemed just and reasonable after thorough evaluation.

Riley contends that the rate increases unfairly burden Hudson Valley families while benefiting Central Hudson's foreign parent company, Fortis. Riley's office stated, "Hudson Valley families are already stretched thin, and they shouldn’t be forced to line the pockets of a foreign corporation that’s raking in record profits."

The rate hikes include increased basic service charges and higher delivery rates, resulting in significant cost increases for customers over the next three years. Despite the opposition, Riley has expressed his determination to pursue legal action if the PSC does not reverse its decision.
