The Regional Food Bank Hudson Valley in Montgomery is set to receive a $50,000 boost from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. This funding will allow the food bank to install a new freezer at its "Shop the Dock" facility, enhancing its ability to distribute meats, proteins, and perishable goods across the region. Assemblyman Brian Maher, who represents the 101st Assembly District, announced the grant, emphasizing its importance for local families.
The food bank, which has grown from 23 to 60 employees since its inception, serves six counties and has significantly expanded its programs for children, seniors, and families. Assemblyman Maher stated, "This is not a gift from me, it’s your taxpayer dollars coming back to support our neighbors." The new freezer will directly increase food access for those in need, according to Executive Director Felicia Kalan.
The food bank has embarked on a $6.5 million capital campaign to construct a new distribution center in Montgomery, aiming to resolve space limitations and improve food distribution efficiency. The 50,000-square-foot facility, which recently opened, is expected to provide long-lasting benefits, reduce transportation costs, and enhance operational efficiencies. Tom Nardacci, CEO of the Regional Food Bank, highlighted the facility's role in meeting the growing demand for food assistance in the Hudson Valley and beyond.
The new distribution center allows the food bank to store and distribute food more efficiently, increasing its capacity by four times for dry, cold, and frozen foods. This expansion will enable the food bank to purchase more food from local growers and distribute it to over 400 partnering agencies in the Hudson Valley. With this new facility, the Regional Food Bank expects to distribute four million more pounds of food, marking a 20 percent increase in its distribution capacity.
