Starting today (Monday, October 20), Laura Sagan steps in as the interim principal at George Washington Elementary School in Kingston. This change follows the unexplained absence of Principal Wanda LoBianco, who has not been at the school since September. The school district has not disclosed the reason for LoBianco's absence, citing personnel privacy concerns.
Sagan brings over 35 years of experience in education to her new role. She has previously served as a social studies teacher, an assistant principal at both elementary and middle school levels, and a middle school principal. Most recently, she was the chief of education at the Center for Discovery, a special education school. According to Spectrum News, Kingston Superintendent Paul Padalino expressed confidence in Sagan's ability to ensure a smooth transition for students and staff.
The situation at George Washington Elementary has been tense, with local parents circulating a questionnaire about LoBianco's alleged mistreatment of students. The Times Union reported that these allegations have led to an investigation by the school district. However, details remain sparse due to privacy rules.
In a letter to families, Sagan emphasized her commitment to leading with honesty and focusing on the well-being of students. She wrote, "I believe schools should be joyful places where every child feels seen, supported, and encouraged to do their best."
